Cassandra Wilson returns with music from her singular 2015 recording Coming Forth By Day, an original homage to Billie Holiday on the centennial of her birth. Celebrated for his rich, dusky sound, improvisational and interpretive gifts, Wilson has expanded jazz singing with her exploration of standards and old blues, country and folk songs, music by Joni Mitchell and Miles Davis. Making her name in the 1980s as a founding member of Steve Coleman’s free-ranging M-Base Collective, Wilson’s breakthrough 1993 album Blue Light Until Dawn was a prime collection of originals and songs by Robert Johnson, Mitchell, Hank Williams and Van Morrison. She won a GRAMMY for 1996’s New Moon Daughter, and the following year sang on the recording and tour of Wynton Marsalis’ Pulitzer Prize-winning oratorio Blood on the Fields. Wilson sings songs associated with Lady Day in her own daring and intuitive way, in stunning versions infused with strings arranged by the esteemed composer Van Dyke Parks and performed by musicians from Nick Cave’s alternative rock band The Bad Seeds as well as Wilson’s regular band, among them the fluid pianist Jon Cowherd.

Cassandra Wilson is a jazz musician, vocalist, songwriter, and producer from Jackson, Mississippi. Described by critic Gary Giddins as “a singer blessed with an unmistakable timbre and attack who has expanded the playing field” by incorporating blues, country and folk music into her work.

She began playing piano at six, guitar by the age of twelve and was working as a vocalist by the mid-’70s, singing a wide variety of material. After moving to New York City in the early 80’s, Cassandra met saxophonist Steve Coleman and became one of the founding members of the M-Base Collective. She signed with Blue Note Records in 1992 and released a landmark album titled “Blue Light ‘Til Dawn” which would pave the way for a new generation of jazz singers seeking an approach and repertoire that challenges the supremacy of the American Standard songbook.

Wilson has continued interpreting in fresh and creative ways vintage blues, country and folk music up until the present day. Her awards include: two Grammys, the Django D’Or, The Edison Music Award, a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail, and the 2012 Echo Award for Jazz. She also performed one of the leading roles in Wynton Marsalis’ “Blood on the Fields,” the first jazz work to receive a Pulitzer Prize.

Cassandra Wilson, widely considered the greatest singer of her generation, changed the way that people thought of jazz with her landmark album Blue Light 'Til Dawn in 1993. Hailed for its adventurous forays outside the American Songbook, Wilson incorporated blues, country and folk into her work in a brand new way. The album earned her widespread critical acclaim, mainstream commercial success, and the unqualified title "America's Best Singer" in Time Magazine.

"Although her recording career has been somewhat erratic, Cassandra Wilson became one of the top jazz singers of the '90s, a vocalist blessed with a distinctive and flexible voice who is not afraid to take chances. She began playing piano and guitar when she was nine and was working as a vocalist by the mid-'70s, singing a wide variety of material. Following a year in New Orleans, Wilson moved to New York... where she became the main vocalist with the M-Base Collective. Although there was really no room for a singer in the overcrowded free funk ensembles, Wilson did as good a job of fitting in as was possible. She worked with New Air and recorded her first album as a leader in 1985. After a few more albums, Cassandra Wilson changed directions and performed an acoustic blues-oriented program. By going back in time, she had found herself, and Wilson has continued interpreting in fresh and creative ways vintage country blues and folk music up until the present day."
