About Cafe du Nord

CAFE DU NORD
Café Du Nord is a nightclub, restaurant and live music venue located in the landmark Swedish-American building in the Upper Market district of San Francisco. Although the Du Nord is known for the quality of the national music acts it showcases, the club retains the ambiance of a classic lounge. Built in 1907, it has maintained its Victorian interiors, featuring the original faux decorated paneling and wainscoting, and a forty-foot hand carved mahogany bar. Details throughout the club hearken back to its past life as a notorious speakeasy during Prohibition. The rich red walls and dark wood interior create the perfect environment to enjoy classic cocktails and the most eclectic live music in town — seven nights a week.

THE SWEDISH AMERICAN HALL
The Swedish American Hall is operated by Café Du Nord as a live music and entertainment venue. Located above the Du Nord in the same building, the Swedish American Hall was built in 1907 by Swedish craftsmen. Its centerpiece is a spectacular grand ballroom that is full of warm woods and old country charm. Though the grand ballroom is large enough to support leading national acts, it is the perfect venue to provide guests with a uniquely intimate musical experience.

THE BAR
Café Du Nord is not only the hottest live music venue in town — it is “one of San Francisco’s hippest watering holes” according to SOMA Magazine. Or, as Rolling Stone Magazine puts it, "located in a former speak-easy, this dark-wooded, subterranean watering hole is the perfect place to lose a few decades over a batch of martinis." Of course, being a former speakeasy, we take a special amount of pride in providing the ultimate cocktail experience. Come on in for a great drink with no attitude.

THE RESTAURANT
Café Du Nord provides some of the tastiest food in town — offering a full dinner menu and bar food 7 nights a week. Our restaurant and catering operations are directed by Chef John Lamkin, owner of the highly regarded Street Restaurant in San Francisco. Check out our nightclub menu! View what the SF Chronicle has to say about our nightclub food. (If you are considering the Du Nord for your private event, our catering menu is much more extensive. See below.) We reserve a limited number of seats in our show room for patrons with dinner reservations. Even without dinner reservations, there is usually plenty of space in our front lounge or at the main bar to sample the best nightclub menu in town. Dinner reservations can be made by calling 415.861.5016.

YOUR PRIVATE EVENTS
We offer two classic and completely unique private events venues in a single location. Whether you are looking for the the old world charm and cathedral like atmosphere of the Swedish American Hall or the cool lounge feel of Café Du Nord, we will help you transport your guests to a different era for a truly memorable event. Please note: our catering menu is much more extensive than our nightclub menu. To learn more about private events at Café Du Nord and the Swedish American Hall, click here.

You may be assessed a significant fine if you post signs on certain specified light poles and other structures. Trust us on this one. The city of San Francisco regularly fines bands that violate the sign posting guidelines. It can cost you $300 per sign. Slow Dance the Night Away
By Matt Crawford (03/27/2009)

" Singer/songwriter Jeremy Jay returns to San Francisco April 3rd for a show at Café du Nord. His latest album Slow Dance, follows his debut LP released less than a year ago, and features a more band-oriented sound with hints of teenage romanticism, surf music, space-age 50s rock and silky falsetto R&B. He spoke with SF Station from Los Angeles following a recent tour of Europe. "

The Former Belle & Sebastian Member Goes Solo
By Chris Ellis (03/10/2006)

" Many know Isobel Campbell as a member of the melancholic Glasgow outfit Belle & Sebastian. Her departure from the band was a disappointment to many but her new solo career has hopefully filled the gap for her devout fans. Her second album, Ballad of the Broken Seas is a chiaroscuro effort with Mark Lanegan (Queens of the Stone Age, Screaming Trees) filling in the shadows. Isobel candidly talks with SF Station about her collaboration with Mark, the cyclical nature of the music world and more. "

The Love X Nowhere Image
The Love X Nowhere
at Café Du Nord 10/4
By Matt Forsman (09/23/2005)

" The San Francisco based band, The Love X Nowhere brings their unique mellow, psychedelic infused rock to Café Du Nord on Tuesday, October 4. Celebrating the release of their second EP, Odyssey, The Love X Nowhere's latest album has the kind of sound that seems all too appropriate for San Francisco. "
