Berlin School – a special style of German movies

Lecture on the “Berliner Schule”- “Berlin School” with Oliver Schütte
and film screening “The State I Am In” by Christian Petzold
8/7/2013, 6:30-9:00 pm

The Goethe Institut San Francisco (German Cultural Center) presents a special lecture and film screening about the “Berlin School”, a new movement in German film that has emerged in the early 21st century.

Our special guest, Oliver Schütte, is an award winning screenwriter, professional consultant for film production companies and a founding member of the German Film Academy. His lecture will explain the most important facts about the “Berlin School”. These films are not interested in showing dramatic sensations; they observe the daily life. The latest and most famous film project of Berlin School is “Dreileben”, a trilogy by film directors Dominik Graf, Thomas Hochhäusler and Christian Petzold. This trilogy project started with an email correspondence between the three directors, and they clearly didn’t always share the same opinion. Dominik Graf wrote at one point:

“My problem with the “Berlin school” or whatever it is called is that, after the first remarkable results, of squares and cities and bungalows and so forth, I was somehow disappointed. Because I felt that after that, instead of expanding narrative possibilities, the danger was more of a narrowing of gaze via style-proclamation and the general German enthronement of waves.”
After Oliver Schütte’s lecture we will show one of the prime examples of the Berlin School: “The State I Am In” (2000), directed by a role model, director Christian Petzold (“Yella” 2007; “Barbara” 2012). “The State I Am In” is about a family that is trying to escape the police for fifteen years. The daughter, who reaches puberty, endangers all of them.
The event will take place on Wednesday, August 7th, at the Auditorium of the Goethe Institut San Francisco, 530 Bush Street. The lecture will start at 6:30pm followed by the movie at 7:30pm. Free admission.
