Life goes on for former KMEL DJ Chuy Gomez after he was surprised by station execs that relieved him of his duties on Thursday—but not without a party in his honor and a brief return to the airwaves tomorrow on two other San Francisco stations.
Mighty will host a party on August 27 organized by DJ Mr. E with Apollo, Big Von, Ivan, J Pro, Mind Motion and more supplying the beats. Admission is free all night but the club will likely reach capacity after doors open at 9pm.
Gomez is also returning the airwaves Tuesday morning (Aug. 19), first as a guest with Fernando and Greg on 99.7 at 7am and at 8am with Steve Masters on Live 105. Both stations invited him on air after he was unceremoniously booted by KMEL without the chance to say goodbye to his fans after working at the station for 20 years. A KMEL representative was not immediately available for comment.
In a phone call today, Gomez says he was as surprised as everyone else when he went into a meeting and station execs told him they were “going to go in a different direction.”
“I was not expecting that,” he said. “Evolution and changes happen, but they could have let me do one more Funky Friday.”
The reaction to decision was immediate, with numerous comments online and posts on social media in support of Gomez.
“It was overwhelming,” he said. “You do what you do and you touch a lot of people, but it was crazy all of the love I received and all the memories people posted.”
Gomez said he’s taking a short break to relax and spend time with his family, but he’s already talking with stations interested in adding him to their roster.
“People reached out to me almost immediately,” he said. “I want to first and foremost start here, at least with the interview process” but if there is a good offer away from the Bay Area, relocating is an option, as well.
