A baby bison died in Golden Gate Park earlier this week after suffering what zoo veterinarians are calling “blunt force trauma.”

Park officials said the bison was found with three broken ribs after a small dog got into the bison paddock in Golden Gate Park. A dog of that size couldn’t injure the bison to the extent it was hurt, but officials said it may have spooked the animal to the point of it slamming into an obstruction like a fence or tree.

Zookeepers from the San Francisco Zoo examined the injured animal after it was originally found on Wednesday morning, treated it and let it rejoin the group of bison. It died a short time later.

Officials with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department said they plan to complete a full investigation into the circumstances that led to the bison’s death.
