When I think of Asian comfort food, I think of a nice bowl of ramen or some dim sum with dumplings and buns. Hence the idea behind Dumplings and Buns, which opened this week on California at Fillmore.
Owner May Lee had the vision of building a spot for people to get all natural dumplings and buns seven days a week. The buns are baked fresh throughout the day and include the traditional savory buns (bao), sweet custard buns and “Boozer Buns” filled with flavors such as Chocolate Kahlua and Lemon Cointreau.
Because the store just opened this week, they are still trying to work out the kinks. According to messages on their Facebook page, equipment problems have caused them to only have buns available and they are hoping to get dumplings going after Labor Day.
Not only is Dumplings and Buns a dine-in or takeout option, but they will also have groceries available for those cooking at home. Several artisan treats await including sauces, dressings, mustards, jams, teas and snacks.
Dumplings and Buns is located at 2411 California St. (at Fillmore) and is open daily from 11-8. Be aware that because of some equipment issues, they may be unexpectedly closed (like on Wednesday).
