‘Tis the Season for Craft Fairs and Trunk Shows!

The weeks before the holidays are fraught with good intentions. I make extensive lists of all the personalized gifts I’m going to make. I stock up on yarn, fabric, paper. I dust off my sewing machine and break out the knitting needles. Then, sometime between another late night at the office and the billionth holiday party, reality sets it. There is no way everyone on my gift-giving list will receive handcrafted goods. At least, not handcrafted by me. Which is why I thank my lucky shopping stars, I live in a city where amazing artists abound and the do-it-yourself revolution is alive and kicking (or shall I say sewing?).

With all the bazaars and trunk shows going on over the next couple weeks, there is no reason any shopper should set foot in a mall. This year, let someone else do the crafting so you can focus on the fun stuff: sleeping in, drinking hot toddies, taking a whirl around the ice rink, curling up with a cup of hot cocoa and of course, shopping. Here’s a rundown of upcoming events:

Friday, December 10
Bazaar Holiday Sales Event
Audre Lorde room of the Women’s Building
3543 18th Street (b/w Guerrero and Valencia)
7 – 10 pm
Free

Drink a little vino and browse the goods. A couple folks to look out for: Bmod jewelry (http://www.bmodjewelry.com) designer Brenda Modliszewski takes glass beads and buttons, combines them with sterling silver wire to make them deliciously wearable. You cannot leave without picking up one of Rose + Sadie’s (http://www.roseandsadie.com) handmade pins. You’ll find boomboxes, birds and bowling pins among the irresistable embroidered felt designs. You’ll also find letterpressed stationary from Peculiar Pair Press, unmentionables from Lucky Underwear, and stuff for the kids from Dumpling.

* A portion of the sellers’ proceeds will be donated to the San Francisco SPCA
