The Residents - God in 3 Persons with John Sanborn

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The Residents
God in 3 Persons

The Residents' God in Three Persons is a propulsive and brooding musical about madness. The Residents' anonymous lead singer performs as disgraced preacher Mr. X, who tells an improbable tale of encounters with a pair of ambiguously gendered conjoined twins, who might be miracle workers. God in 3 Persons confronts audiences with the horrors of losing your soul while attempting to attain perfection.

God in 3 Persons is a live video/theater work, adapted by media artist John Sanborn, from The Residents' groundbreaking 1988 album of the same name. Sanborn also fills the mind's eye with "hallucinogenic" visuals to take us deep into the disturbed psyche of Mr. X. Anonymous since their 1972 debut, The Residents provide live accompaniment, performing here as a six-piece musical ensemble with a featured vocalist. Renowned gender queer porn star Jiz Lee portrays the twins, seen only on screen. Travis Chamberlain directs the work for the stage with musical direction by Joshua Raoul Brody, sound design by Jake Rodriguez, puppet and prop design by Leigh Barbier. Steve Saporito produces.

About John Sanborn

John Sanborn (video artist; he/him) is an award-winning, world-renowned media artist whose body of work ranges from the technological stone age of the 1970's to the digital bleeding edge of today. He's been called "the acknowledged genius in the field" by Vanity Fair, and "...unparalleled master of the video medium... the most outstanding artist working in media today" by the Cahiers du Cinema. Sanborn's works have been shown at almost every contemporary art museum in the world, including the Whitney Museum; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Prado, Madrid; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Tate Gallery, London; and the Seibu Museum, Tokyo. His video works have been broadcast world-wide (BBC, Channel Four, A2, RTBF, Sky), including 16 programs for PBS featuring works with Bill T. Jones, Philip Glass, Nam June Paik, Twyla Tharp, The Residents, and David Gordon. "Frank Leaves for the Orient" (Comedy Central), his groundbreaking sitcom was hailed as "the most mind blowing, hilarious thing on TV, ever" by the SF Chronicle. A dance work created for "Great Performances" starring Mikhail Baryshnikov and directed by Sanborn won a Primetime Emmy Award. During the heyday of MTV, Sanborn directed music videos (including works with Nile Rodgers, Sammy Hagar, Philip Glass, Tangerine Dream, Peter Gordon, Talking Heads, Grace Jones, King Crimson and Van Halen) and designed and directed dozens of commercials for clients including Nintendo, Hitachi, Pioneer; and The Disney Channel. His video self-portrait "Quirky" was broadcast on the PBS series "The Independents", hosted by Buck Henry. John Sanborn holds an honorary Master of Cinema degree from ESEC, in Paris, and was named a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the Minister of Culture of the Republic of France. The Mill Valley Film Festival honored him with a lifetime achievement award in 2017.
