Summer Fashion Trends

What's Hot for the Summer

Still heavily influenced by the 70s, this seasonís trends range from short and tight to long and flowing.

Cropped tees are back. To avoid looking like you shrunk your top in the wash, opt for a loose fit thatís both comfortable and chic. British label Motel has plenty to offer in sheer, denim, vertical striped and floral varieties. Pair with high-wasted skinny jeans or tucked into high-wasted shorts and flouncy skirts.

Chaser is known for rock tees; its cropped muscle tees feature the likes of Van Halen, Beastie Boys, T. Rex, Nirvana and Megadeth, to name a few, and are distressed to feel like your favorite shirt thatís been washed countless times. Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Richie, Vanessa Hudgens and Oliva Wilde have been snapped in Chaser gear. Dark skinny jeans or faded light denim shorts make good matches.

Color-blocking, which is really just the juxtaposition of blocks of color, is really in. Jessica Alba showcased this trend recently with her coral and purple color-blocked Diane Von Furstenberg maxi dress. Eva Mendes made a splash with a white and tan halter Salvatore Ferragamo number at his Resort 2012 Fashion Show. Marc by Marc Jacobs jersey color-blocked dresses and swimwear fit the bill. Mini and maxi dresses by Aqua are another option.

The peekaboo trend continues in a variety of guises from subtle to blatantly bare. Give a teasing hint of skin with the sheer crocheted Swan Dive Ruffled Tunic or sheer striped Scoot Inn Oversized Pullover from Free People. Consider Aidan Mattox frocks for a little shoulder-baring action; slit sleeves tastefully show off toned limbs.

Australian label Style Stalker takes a not-subtle approach. Its Snakebite leggings are laced all up and down the front to show some leg in a sexy rocker nod to bondage. The cutaway camis and dresses will draw the eye to your back or sides with sassy cutouts that may call for creative (or no) underwear.

Long flowy maxi skirts and dresses exude romantic femininity. Ella Moss does casual maxi skirts with class; the solid grays, stripes or florals need only a simple top for effortless grace. Mink Pinkís soft girly dresses come in a variety of cuts and floral or tribal patterns.

Trade your black and blue jeans in for candy-colored denim. Pair a neutral top with bright blue, fuchsia or orange cropped skinny jeans from J Brand. Even Diesel has ponied up to the trend, with luscious purple and hot pink offerings.

In a nod to disco, platforms and wedges are back in a big way. Jeffrey Campbell can do no wrong. From suede lace-up wedge booties in delicious pastels to leopard suede platforms with hell cutouts to platform creepers. Glitter, stars and stripes, crushed velvet, peep-toe combat boots ó Jeffrey Campbell makes a statement.
