Small Press Distribution Opens Doors

Famous Writers, Free Food & Great Deals

If you're tired of sitting around waiting for the next John Grisham or Danielle Steele tome to emerge from the land of corporate-dom, be sure to check out Small Press Distribution's Open House on April 20th in Berkeley for some nuggets of indie publishing.

Founded in 1969, SPD is a nonprofit book wholesaler representing more than 500 small, independent literary presses, including City Lights Books. Sun & Moon Press, Hanging Loose and many more small presses. Better-known SPD writers include Sherman Alexie, Audre Lord and Allen Ginsberg, but on average, SPD titles sell about 50 copies each and are books which would be otherwise completely overlooked, were it not for SPD's support.

SPD started having Open Houses when they moved from San Pablo Avenue to Seventh Street and had to close their retail outlet. As Development Officer Emily Grossman says, "Locals, who used the store as their source for poetry, were sad when we closed our retail outlet, so we originally devised the open house as a way to welcome these people back -- as consolation of sorts. It was also originally conceived as a way to say thank you to our local donors," like ACME Bread Co., Berkeley Bowl and The Cheeseboard who, among others, are donating food and drinks for the event.

Local author readings begin at 2 pm and include Janice Mirikitani, San Francisco Poet Laureate, executive director of Glide Church, and author of Love Works (City Lights Foundation); Alfred Arteaga, author of House with the Blue Bed, and assistant professor of literature at UC Berkeley; Dodie Bellamy author of a collection of Burroughs-inspired prose poems, Cunt-Ups (Tender Buttons 2001), and The Letters of Mina Harker (Hard Press 1998); Jono Schneider author of two books of poetry, Walking and Talking (Melodeon 1999) and The World (Instress 1999), editor of Untitled, a prose poetry magazine; and giovanni singleton, founding editor of nocturnes (re)view of the literary arts and 1999 New Langton Arts Bay Area Award Show awardee.

All books in the warehouse will be discounted between 20-50%, so take advantage of this chance to stock up on independently published titles from around the world.
