Silicon Valley Poetry Slam

At the Silicon Valley Poetry Slam, ten poets compete in two rounds, with cash prizes awarded to the top three slammer. Top poets at the annual Silicon Valley's Poetry Slam Finals advance to the National Poetry Slam, held in a different city each year.

Host Anthony R. Miller who took over the job of host during the summer, has breathed new life into the event. Writing to the Slam Update, he says, "A lively audience and awesome poetry made for a great night at waves. The Snuggle Bandits and I have a few surprises up our sleeves and you'll have to hear it to believe it."

Anthony's brought in some amazing talent to give the South Bay some much-needed literary cred, with more slam heavyweights lined up for the months to come. He is hopeful that previous shows indicate how things shape up given that "the new crop of talent has come and they're just gonna get better.... Besides the slam, the band and excellent beer, we had some great features." Another bonus is the $60 prize.

As for the setting, the place couldn't have a more colorful background, as Waves occupies a the oldest commercial building in the area, built in 1873. How ironic that it's now in the gentrified area of downtown San Jose -- a historic landmark that used to be a brothel!

Descend the staircase to the saloon and the sight hits your eyes of a gorgeous antique mahogany bar. One hopes that in the event of a tie, poets won't get possessed to put on repeat performances of chair throwing.

The restorers may have preserved the classic look, polished the hardwood floor, but when the slammers fill the place, it takes your nostalgic gaze away from the Victorian window frames and brings you back squarely to the present, especially when wordsmiths are up there showing no mercy. Maybe someday soon, the draw will be so big that more slam enthusiasts will make the drive south all the way to the old cow town.
