Golden Anniversary

If you graduated from high school, chances are very good that you've had at least one encounter with Samuel Beckett's sparse, riddling play [i]Waiting for Godot[/i]. This year [i]Godot[/i], which many who know of such things call one of the most influential plays of the twentieth-century turns fifty, and to celebrate the A.C.T. has decided to revive the old goat once again. Literary Violence

A man hunting gazelle comes across a stack of dead Mexican drug runners and a pile of money. A cold-blooded bounty hunter chases the man across Texas, killing all who stand in his way. An aging sheriff hunts both of them. These elements could belong in any thriller about the early days of drug trafficking along the Texas-Mexico border. The difference? This thriller was written by Cormac McCarthy, so the scenes and prose are a bit different from what you'd read in any old thriller. More »

The plot lives up to the title

From the very beginning of [i]Derailed[/i], one senses impending doom and tragedy, not just for the characters in the film but also for the audience. Charles Schine (a craggy, spent Clive Owen) trudges to work every morning in the Chicago rain. His wife is a cold shell of a woman who won't even kiss him good-bye in the morning. His daughter is a Type 1 diabetic. His dog has a small bladder. And so on. More »

Without revealing too much about the material, I'll tell you that the best thing about [i]The Aristocrats[/i] is not the cinematography. It's the hundred jokes. If you like comedy, and you don't mind it dirty -- filthy, in fact -- then you'll like this movie. More »

Road Trip!

Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland gives us this languid, beautifully-shot film about a couple of society's rejects making their way towards, well, something. Paced slowly and purposefully, this is a road trip movie in which a young man named Binh (Damian Nguyen) sets out from his home in Viet Nam to find his mother and his father. Along the way he befriends a young prostitute (Bai Ling) and braves the high seas on a black market refugee ship captained by an evil Tim Roth. More »
Hollywood: The Land of Pointless Remakes

Remember a few years back when Gus Van Sant re-made [i]Psycho[/i]? Shot for shot? One of the most classic films of all times, re-made, shot for shot, by a director who has at least some chops of his own. Pointless. Not bad, really, as it was basically the exact same thing as the original, a little worse I guess, but not exactly bad. Just pointless. And in retrospect, it seems to have kicked off an entire era of pointless remakes and sequels. More »
