Celluloid Apocalypse

Contrary to popular belief, it would appear that dead men DO tell tales; quite a few of them in fact. Zombie films have clearly become the genre of choice these days with 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead (remake), and the upcoming Shaun of the Dead all being released within little more than twelve months of each other. Remarkably, each of the aforementioned movies has, in at least some trivial way, managed to distinguish itself from previous zombie flicks, that is until now.

Enter Resident Evil: Apocalypse. R.E. amalgamates the Matrix films, all previous imaginable zombie flicks ever made, Mortal Kombat (no surprise here as the screenwriter for Mortal Kombat, Paul W.S. Anderson, penned Resident Evil: Apocalypse), and steals frame for frame numerous shots from several action and science fiction films. It's a genre 'ghoul'ash (forgive the pun).

Despite the contrived, formulaic nature of this film, there is a subtext that intrigues and salvages the film to some extent. The true villain in Resident Evil: Apocalypse is the 'Umbrella' Corporation. They are the largest corporate entity in the world and in bearing this moniker are appropriately immoral, unethical, and inhumane. Resident Evil: Apocalypse becomes in some respects (unintentionally?) a scathing indictment of Corporate America.

If the subtext doesn't float your boat, there are numerous 'bullet' time fighting sequences, stilted acting, and laughable dialogue to help you weather this one. However, for those who do not have an affinity for self-flagellation, please refrain.
