Adults Only (18+).

We're thrilled to co-present this collaborative work from celebrated local artists, filmmaker Paul Clipson and musician and composer Zachary James Watkins. Black Field intertwines both creators' inventive approaches to their crafts through an original, long-form film and live musical performance projected in glistening 16mm, with sound sonically diffused across the Kanbar Forum's multichannel sound system. Both Clipson and Watkins design new ways to experience the familiar. Clipson through masterful use of superimposition and visual abstraction to reimagine landscapes, and Watkins in explorations of tones and resonance often designed for the space he's performing in.

The San Francisco Cinematheque's commission and world premiere screening of Black Field is made possible by a generous grant from The Fleishhacker Foundation.

San Francisco–based filmmaker Paul Clipson often collaborates with sound artists and musicians on films, live performances, and installations. His largely improvised, in-camera-edited films bring to light subconscious preoccupations and unexpected visual forms. His works have been exhibited and performed both nationally and internationally at such festivals as the New York Film Festival, Edinburgh Film Festival, and the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Zachary James Watkins studied composition at Cornish College and electronic music and recording media at Mills College. He has performed in numerous festivals across the United States, Mexico, and Europe, and his band Black Spirituals opened for pioneering drone metal band Earth during their 2015 European tour. Zachary has been an Artist in Residence at the Espy Foundation, Djerassi, and the Headlands Center for The Arts.
