Minxy Boutique

Affordable Ladies’ Vintage

At Minxy Boutique, you’ll find carefully selected and cared for ladies’ vintage clothing, shoes, handbags, and jewelry at surprisingly affordable prices.

San Jose native Tuc Luong, a long-time eBay vintage seller, realized her lifetime dream of opening her own vintage boutique last October on 24th Street next to Mission Skateboards. Formerly working in the insurance industry, Tuc wrote a business plan, and a year later opened shop in the space formerly occupied by Blue Six, a speakeasy/hipster music venue.

With its hardwood floor and fixtures all hand-built by Tuc’s furniture-maker boyfriend, Minxy feels like a high-end boutique sans haughty attitude.

“The entire store is recycled,” Tuc says proudly. A beautiful bench at the rear of the shop is held up by polished brass fire hose nozzles refashioned into legs. The simple ceiling-mounted lights were found in a junkyard.

All clothing pieces are laundered with environmentally safe detergent prior to being hung on cherry hangers, further reinforcing the high-end feel. Tuc makes small alterations to some of the clothing if needed before selling; she removed extreme shoulder pads from a white cropped jacket with fabulous turquoise and gold shoulder embellishments reminiscent of an outfit from Jem and the Holograms.

New items are added to the store every other week, everything chosen by Tuc who makes sure to carry a diverse selection of styles as well as sizes. You’ll find a pretty even mix from different decades as well as contemporary designers. I couldn’t find a single item in the store over $85 (the price for a pair of Bandolino black leather knee-high zippered boots).

Other styles in the $70 and above price range included black leather jackets with and without fringe, fringed leather short shorts, and a variety of boots, including a pair of faux fur yeti boots.

Minxy’s jewelry reflects Tuc’s penchant for statement jewelry: bold accents to spice up any ensemble. One of Tuc’s favorites of the moment is a pair of earrings featuring black feathers dangling from a column of chunky gems ($28) — though there’s only one pair. Cop of pair of chain-topped sunglasses in the style of the Chanel shades seen on Rihanna and Amber Rose for a fraction of the price ($17).

There’s also a stylish collection of handbags, including a basket of clutches. According to Tuc, Minxy is a popular destination for slouchy sweaters and “secretary blouses”; you can definitely build your sexy librarian wardrobe here.

In San Francisco, vintage/thrift boutiques are a dime a dozen. The beautiful space, attention to every detail (laundering and mending all items if needed prior to sale), range of styles, and the owner’s friendly attitude make Minxy Boutique a place you’ll want to return to again and again. The super-affordable pricing is icing on the cake.
