Home on the Range

A Little Patch of Heaven

In the aftermath of Pixar's defection and the Eisner coup, Home on the Range shines through the Walt Disney Corporation's recent turmoil, delivering a fine throwback to classic animated features. More Peter Pan than Finding Nemo, it may be one of the last chances to catch a cartoon movie that doesn't look like it was made on the Mac.

The quaint Patch of Heaven dairy farm is given three days to come up with $750 to keep the bank from auctioning its land. Three cows, along with a headstrong horse and peg-legged jackrabbit, team up to raise enough money to save their farm. The plan is to capture the notorious cattle thief Alameda Slim and collect the hefty reward.

Notable voices include: Roseanne Barr, Judi Dench, Jennifer Tilly, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Randy Quaid. The music, performed by big name stars Tim McGraw, Bonnie Raitt, and K.D. Lang, is nothing overly memorable, but lively enough to keep the little ones tapping their toes. Most importantly, there's plenty of adult humor to keep parent and babysitters entertained throughout.

Bring your kids, nieces, and nephews. If they don't like it, give them a speech about how Disney movies looked back in the good ol' days...and how you used to have to walk 6 miles to school every morning in the freezing cold.
