Hello Kitty Pop-Up

Sanrio Turns 50

Legions of Hello Kitty and My Melody devotees — there is a big birthday celebration in town. Sanrio Inc. the popular lifestyle company that created the round-faced kitty with its signature red bow, along with her fellow characters, is turning 50 this year.

To kick off the celebration, Hello Kitty and her entourage are on tour in their own mobile pop-up store that will roll into various cities across the country. First stop? San Francisco — hometown to Sanrio USA.

The eight-week mobile pop-up tour starts Saturday, October 23rd at Justin Herman Plaza from 10am to 6pm. The tour continues with another stop at Pier 39 on Sunday, October 24th from 11:30am to 7:30pm. From there the tour hits the road on a cross-country tour. Goody bags go to the first 50 people in attendance.

It is hard to miss the convoy. Two fiery red trailers adorned with all the Sanrio characters are cruising into the city as part of this mobile pop-up tour. The crew is celebrating Sanrio’s 50th milestone with a yearlong event that evolves around its company philosophy of “small gift, big smile.”

The Small Gift program debuts at the pop-up store, which plans to carry must-have collectible products in celebration of all its Sanrio characters. The 50th gift is sold exclusively at Target, Sanrio’s partner retail destination for over ten years. Some of these Small Gift collectibles include a coin purse, tote bag, and lunch box.

The commemorative wallet is especially fetching. Like many of the Small Gift items, it depicts the entire Sanrio clan from both the old and new legacy. Besides Hello Kitty, the old guard includes Keroppi, the loveable bug-eyed frog, and My Melody, the bunny that always wears a form fitting hoodie for its long ears. Also joining the crew are Little Twin Stars, Tuxedosam, and Chocolat, to name a few.

As part of this mobile retail experience, guests can tailgate this event in an interactive space. On-site visitors can playing games, enter contests and sharing photo ops with their favorite characters. There will also be in-store celebrations that include contests, giveaways and gifts with purchases at the Sanrio retail outlets. Stop by the Sanrio spin wheel to win prizes.

Founded in Japan during the 1960s by Shintaro Tsuji, Sanrio in the last 50 years has watched its characters become lifelong childhood icons and that continue through adulthood. College graduates and beyond can be seen with Hello Kitty charms or Kerropi tees as part of their fashion ensemble.

No matter the fan’s age there is certainty that Sanrio’s 50th shows no signs of aging. All the Sanrio mascots are ready to embark on their road trip to start the celebrations with not only a small gift, but also a very big smile.
