Heart of Gold

You know I Lose, You Know I Win

In August of 2005, Jonathan Demme recorded two nights' worth of Neil Young shows at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Heart of Gold is the result of this collaboration, and in it, Neil Young presents most of the songs from his latest album Prarie Wind along with several songs from past albums.

Demme is no stranger to concert films; his 1984 Stop Making Sense starring the Talking Heads is widely considered one of the best concert films of all time. He uses a stark filmmaking style in Heart of Gold that allow's Neil Young's music to speak for itself.

Die-hard Neil fans will enjoy the ten or so minutes at the start of the film that features interviews with various members of the all-star band Neil assembled for the shows. However, even as a diehard Neil fan, I was somewhat disappointed that he didn't delve deeper into his canon of music. The songs from Prarie Wind are nice, but I ended up wanting a little more out of the film.
