Guess Who

An Interracial Meet the Parents

Ashton Kutcher is a far cry from Sidney Poitier. And Bernie Mac is, well, not exactly Spencer Tracy. This updated (with a twist, of course) remake of the 1967 classic Guess Who's Coming To Dinner is more Meet The Parents (read: old and played out) than anything else; there's a lot less class and a lot more hijinks.

Guess Who is your typical future son-in-law meets future father-in-law set-up. While the filmmakers may have tried to recreate a new paradigm, they didn't go very far. All the essential stereotypical roles are in place: the father is a crazy, over-protective figure while the boyfriend is a bumbling idiot.

Ashton Kutcher is said idiot. He plays Simon Green, the very white boyfriend whom Theresa (Zoe Saldana) brings home to her very black family for a special occasion (her parents, Percy (Bernie Mac) and Marilyn (Judith Scott) are renewing their vows). For some reason, Theresa thinks this would be a good time to tell them that she and Simon are engaged to be married; note that he has not yet been introduced.

While Guess Who has its funny moments (one of which entails Simon wrestling with Theresa as he is dressed in one of her negligees and having Percy walk in on them and another in which Percy and Simon play football in the living room), this worn-out comedy shtick does not warrant the ten-dollar ticket to the movie.
