You're invited to the US premiere of GIFT, a richly cinematic feature documentary about art and gift culture. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring the director and a party.
Inspired by Lewis Hyde's beloved classic, "The Gift: Creativity and the Artist in the Modern World," "GIFT" is a richly cinematic film exploring the parallels between artists' work and a gift economy. Interweaving the stories of a young Kwak'wakwala indigenous man undertaking preparations for a potlatch, an Italian living museum occupied by migrant families, a bumblebee art car at Burning Man, and artist Lee Mingwei sharing the "transformative gift" of song, the film is a tribute to something that can't be measured, counted, bought or sold.
Writer Jonathan Lethem said about the film, "A beautiful, moving, and thought-provoking reflection on the creative process and the things that make us human."
-John Law will introduce the film with a talk about the transformative power of art, and need for gifting and the arts in society. John is an artist and culture jammer, Suicide Club member, and a co-founder of the Cacophony Society and Burning Man.
-The screening will be followed by a conversation with Robin McKenna, John Law, and Michelle "Smallfry" Lessans (a protagonist in the film) plus audience Q&A.
-Then join us for drinks and afterparty in the mezzanine.
