Ella Enchanted

Fairies, Elves and Trolls- oh my!

Let me get straight to the point: this is a girly movie. It's got all the necessary ingredients for a lovely fairy tale including a prince, an evil stepmother and a ball plus a few other things that make this feel-good flick standout from the rest. Director Tommy O'Haver (Get Over It & Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss) creates an enchanting land full of all the creatures you dreamed up as a kid but with a twenty-first century twist. He adds anachronistic touches like rock-n-roll music and a mall complete with a wooden staircase escalator.

Instead of your usual air-headed blonde heroine, you have a brown-eyed brunette with a brain, Ella of Frell (the lovely Anne Hathaway). At her birth, she was given the "gift" of obedience by a wayward fairy named Lucinda (Vivica A Fox). Needless to say, the gift turns out to be more of a curse as Ella has had to literally do everything anyone has ever told her to do, whether she likes it or not. When her father remarries a horrid plastic surgery experiment (Joanna Lumley of Ab Fab fame) who comes with equally frightening daughters, Hattie (Lucy Punch) and Olive (Jennifer Higham), Ella's life goes from bad to worse.

She embarks on a mission to find Lucinda and get her gift refunded. Along the way she meets an Elf (do not think Lord of the Rings, think Christmas) who wants to be a lawyer, a boyfriend-cum-book, who's entirely too handsome to be parchment, some starving Trolls and, of course, Prince Charming.

Prince Charmont, simply known as Char, is played by actor Hugh Dancy, a charismatic hybrid between Heath Ledger and Orlando Bloom. Cary Elwes gives a big, campy wink to his role as the good guy in The Princess Bride by playing the Prince's evil uncle Edgar.

Ella Enchanted has your typical fairy tale love story that will either make you sigh or roll your eyes in disgust. Balancing this is both humor and a Shrek-like quirkiness. It's life through rose-colored bi-focals- half-la la land and half-reality bites
