* Deep dish pizza with pepperoni, artichoke hearts and spinach at Patxi's, the new Chicago-style place in Hayes Valley. Bonus points to Patxi's for
marinating the onions and peppers for their Greek salad, and for offering whole wheat crust and soy cheese for the hippies!

* Although Ferry Plaza Seafood's mustardy mixed greens make a more appealing bed for crab louie than traditional iceberg lettuce, and the oysters are just as fresh as anywhere else, even the waterfront location can't fix the fact that Swan Oyster Depot wins for its New England clam chowder and charismatic service alone.

* Linguine carbonara from the Mark Bittman cookbook, with a salad on the side so that all of that bacon, egg and cheese-drenched pasta seems, when you squint at it, like a healthy dinner.

Mr. Smith's: groovy, multilevel Victorian charm hole, or Barbary Coast mothership for meat market scenesters? Could be both.
