American Seafood with San Francisco Panache! Located in heart of the Marina Bar & Dining District, this is the insider spot where the staff from such hot spots as Gary Danko, Isa and A16 go after work to relax from 11pm to 1am every night. Designer John Lum, who also did the interiors for AsiaSF and Hayes & Vine Wine Bar, has turned the space on Lombard next to the King Edward Hotel into a spot that conceptually brings the ocean to you. The restaurant's interior is sophisticated in its imagery, yet simple and down to earth to compliment the fresh ingredients of the cooking. A boat shaped, finely crafted bar welcomes patrons. Soft lighting and white panel walls highlight an abstract seascape mural that stretches along one wall. A curvaceous banquette, evocative of a curling wave, is the main focus of the restaurant – making Café Maritime a spot equally intimate for a casual date or a group get together any night of the week. Fresh, fresh, fresh seafood is the byword that has gained Café Maritime stellar user comments on Yelp, Citysearch and SFSurvey (although the hanger steak is perfectly executed as well). A lot of transplanted East Coast folks told owner Mark Mitcheltree that they remembered restaurants back home specializing in ultra-fresh, simply prepared seafood at reasonable prices so he has had 15 year veteran Chef Eduardo Martinez (formerly with Momo’s and The Waterfront) fuse East Coast simplicity with West Coast local ingredients. Sustainability is a special concern. A well thought out wine list. 12 offerings are under $35, 8 more are $45 or under (although there are plenty of higher end, special occasion choices as well). By the glass options, including champagne, are more than plentiful and change seasonally as owner Mitcheltree, a former head waiter at San Jose’s prestigious Eulipia, knows how important it is to look for value for his regulars and not bore them with the same old, same old.
