Description

Between the years of 1857 and 1899 the Mechanics' Institute of San Francisco hosted thirty one Industrial Fairs that displayed and promoted the products of local entrepreneurs and inventors. These fairs bolstered the local economy, encouraged the demand for local goods, and were a manifestation of quintessential “San Francisco” traits: optimism, outstanding creativity, and the plucky courage to innovate the answers to our region’s problems. Come celebrate the 160th anniversary of the Mechanics' Institute's first fair with this illustrated lecture by Institute Librarian Taryn Edwards and presentations by some of San Francisco's heritage companies that exhibited at the fairs.
