Bay Area vs. SXSW

Putting the 'West' in South By Southwest

South By Southwest, the annual Austin-based gathering of film, music, and technology, will -- as always -- have a strong Bay Area presence. From newer independent acts to many of the area's most established labels, artists and publicity houses, the second week of March will be remembered by a massive convergence of west and southwest.

The most conspicuous event will be "SF x SXSW" on March 15th at the venue Bourbon Rocks. The show is hosted by San Francisco label and production company Talking House and will feature many SF sponsors and nearly 20 Bay Area artists.

For SF x SXSW, the bands are divided between an evening "showcase" and a "day party". The showcase will run from 8pm until past 2am and feature The Magic Bullets, Sean Hayes, Audrye Sessions, Elephone, The Matches, Film School, and Minipop. The day party begins at 12:30pm with Bart Davenport and continues with The Heavenly States, Mud, Sugar and Gold, LoveLikeFire, Nyles Lannon, Port O'Brien, The Dodos, Built For The Sea, Loquat, and Chuck Prophet.

Other young Bay Area bands like The Morning Benders will fill most days of the festival, not only with many shows (the band already has four scheduled), but many types of shows. The Morning Benders will, within 24 hours, get to play a house party and open for the British band The English Beat.

The more-established Oakland hip-hop label Anticon Records will share a showcase with Tomlab Records on Saturday, March 15th. The showcase features three Bay Area bands including Hey! Willpower, Thee Oh Sees, and Why?

Why? also performs at the Terrorbird Media daytime showcase with a dozen other acts on March 12th. Terrorbird is a boutique publicity firm out of Oakland that services international acts like LCD Soundsystem and Justice. Sizeable national performers like The Blow and Raveonettes round out the show, which promises "free rad gift bags."

Unusual lineups and free swag are just a few of the reasons SXSW can be great for all bands -- not just hometown heroes. This is especially true for one group, however. SF's Scissors For Lefty are opening a showcase curated by TV personality Rachel Ray. Ray joins forces with the blog Brooklyn Vegan for a day show that also features The Stills and DJ Efren (a.k.a. "Pedro" from the film Napoleon Dynamite).
