Asian American Heritage Future Roots Festival

SEE EVENT DETAILS
About
A celebration of APA Heritage Month, presented by the Office of Councilmember Ash Kalra, Asian Americans for Community Involvement, and MYX TV

Description
Together with Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) and MYX TV, San Jose Councilmember Ash Kalra is hosting the first ever Asian American Heritage Future Roots Festival, in the heart of downtown San Jose at Plaza de Cesar Chavez.

The Future Roots Festival will celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, recognizing the many contributions and achievements of Asian and Pacific Islanders (API) in the United States.

As each generation rediscovers its roots, it also defines its own identities through new ideas, cultures, and attitudes, becoming the foundation for each generation thereafter. While the festival commemorates Asian and Pacific Islanders throughout history, it also celebrates the artists, activists, and scholars of today. The Future Roots Festival presents us with an opportunity to honor those whose stories will someday become part of our API heritage.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month was first established in 1977 when Representatives Frank Horton and Norman Mineta and Senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced resolutions asking the President to declare the first ten days of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week. In 1978, President Carter made it an annual event and in 1990, President George H.W. Bush proclaimed the entire month of May to be Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

The Future Roots Festival will feature performances by API artists, including traditional and contemporary dance and music, as well as delectable tastings from gourmet food trucks, arts and crafts, free community health screenings, and multi-lingual booths. We anticipate the festival to be the largest Asian Pacific American event in the South Bay, attracting thousands of visitors from across the Bay Area, including local, state and federal elected officials.
