Anvil! The Story of Anvil

Some Dreams Never Die

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

The story of this metal band may look like a real-life Spinal Tap and, actually, itís not too far off. Sacha Gervasiís directorial debut documents Canadian band Anvil as they enter their golden years, nearly 30 years since their debut in the early 80s, still searching for their big break.

While it may seem pathetic that two guys in their 50s are still spending every waking hour trying to become rock stars, itís actually a very sobering story. Childhood friends Steve ďLipsĒ Kudlow and Robb Reiner (no relation to the Spinal Tap director) broke out in the early 80s as one of metalís premiere bands. Unfortunately, they never quite ďmadeĒ it despite influencing some of the bands that did like Metallica and Anthrax. Lips and Reiner may have gained and lost band members, labels and managers, but Anvil is till their top priority and they continue to make records and tour -- money and time provided.

Gervasi doesnít just follow the band through a big yet ill-fated European tour but also interviews Lipsí and Reinerís family. While wives and siblings find it hard to support a ďlostĒ dream, they all still go out of their way to let them continue. There are issues of money, time, management, labels and explosive fights between Lips and Reiner, yet Anvil always pushes forward.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil is more than just a documentary about a band. At the heart, itís the story of two childhood friends who share a common dream that they refuse to let die.
