Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

Released on Domino Records, 1/20/09

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Merriweather Post Pavilion, the ninth release from the Baltimore-based pioneers of avant-garde progressive, neo-folk, (add your own fawning, far-reaching, sonic descriptor here), is nothing short of mind-blowing. Having managed to bridge the gap between true compositional and performative experimentalism, the members of Animal Collective are the innovators of a new and true polyphonic era.

While previous releases, seemed to be driven by a greater sense of urgency, were spastic, churning, and insistent, Merriweather Post Pavilion emanates a persistent calm as if the notes begin to settle within their very inception. To say that they have matured into their sound would be misleading and false.

The sound seems to have matured into them, has risen from within them. They have manipulated our perceptions with their invocation to the natural world and have forever altered our vision. From the pulsing dance beats of “My Girls” to the lullaby lilts of “Bluish” to the blissful and buoyant “Brother Sport”, Merriweather Post Pavilion is fluid and constant, at once a rising tide and a setting sun, and is a real joy to experience.
