Much Loved Lefty O’Doul’s Finds a Second Life in New Location

The popular Union Square bar and restaurant Lefty O’Doul’s, unfortunately, closed back in January 2017 due to a dispute between the owner and his landlord with no return in sight. Fortunately, a little good news…the restaurant is expected to return but to a new location and with slightly different ownership.

The new location in Fisherman’s Wharf is to be called Lefty O’Doul’s Ballpark Buffet and Cafe, and its owner is Lod Ballpark Buffet, LLC, which is setting Nick Bovis (the former owner of Lefty O’Douls) as the manager. Lefty’s will be taking over the Rainforest Cafe’s old space at 145 Jefferson Street and have the bottom level as a San Francisco Giants store and cafe serving Starbucks coffee, while the top floor will be solely Lefty O’Doul’s.

Lefty O’Doul’s was named after the well-known and respected New York Giants star outfielder. With a .398 batting average he boasted the highest average out of any outfielder in the 20th century. Lefty was also credited with bringing America’s favorite past time over the pond to Japan right after World War 2. When he came back to the homeland, he was so inspired by what he saw that he decided to open a bar and restaurant where strangers could become friends, and where people might get a glimpse of a celebrity every once in awhile.

There is currently no date set in stone for the opening of Lefty’s 2.0, but many believe it will come in the middle or end of August. Until then, all we can do is wait with mouths watering. If you would like to know more about the history of Lefty’s or their menu options, click here.
