Thursday, July 24: Jon Hopkins at Mezzanine
Beyond his impeccable Immunity album last year, Jon Hopkins has always angled toward exquisite. The UK electronica producer is a concert pianist, a composer for film and contemporary dance, a Mercury Prize nominee, collaborator to ambient artist Brian Eno and co-producer for Coldplay. His music is perceptive to both emotion and sound architecture, evoking a keen sense of wistfulness through the juxtaposition of languid piano riffs and warped, swallowing mechanics. And though the beauty takes the mind, Hopkins still takes accolades from the techno world for sculpting periods of pensiveness between dance-floor turning tremors.

Thursday, July 24: United Hearts Fundraiser feat. J.Phlip & Kahn at Public Works [Loft]

Illinois-born, San Francisco-based producer J.Phlip is best tied to the booty bass collective Dirtybird. Her own meaty take on tech house to ghetto funk leaves the bone in, coursing with big synths stabs and kick drums that are wide to please. Also on the bill, eclectic producer Kahn, part of Bristol’s Young Echo collective, sinks the grimier bass sounds (e.g. his “Namkha” remix for Ishland Sound) to “Angeles,” a vocal hooky, pop-garage track primed for the limelight. All proceeds for this party go toward purchasing the United Hearts School Bus for the United Hearts orphanage in Ghana.

Friday, July 25: Haceteria w/ Exillon (Live PA) + Caltrop (Live) + Aja Vision (Live) at 1192 Folsom
Here’s what’s coming out of San Francisco today. Local producer Exillon, a.k.a. Jay Fields, along with his Jacktone Records imprint, has a raw edge turned toward heavy and innately ominous acid, electro, techno and “abandoned house.” Thick to the 303, Exillon’s experimental sound spectrum is, bluntly stated, dirty and raving. Barbed pitch bends and hard bassline kicks give his live analog sets a driving urgency that, at their tail end, ripple and loom psychoactively into empty, black space.

Saturday, July 26: Lee Burridge at Public Works
The idea that a time of day can fit a certain sound—in the case, sunrise—is coolly championed by Lee Burridge. In fact, for the last few years, the UK DJ/producer (mostly associated with the former) has been synonymous with Burning Man’s Robot Heart collective, and the ethereal womb of melodic “dream house” he builds in the desert come sunup. Other decades, like the 90s, saw Burridge leading an underground scene in Hong Kong, later to grow into a global mega-club staple throughout the 2000s. By this point, Burridge has built a cult following, sought out for his deep entrancement with the weight of a feather.

Saturday, July 26: Tim Hecker, Jim Hayes, Ganucheau & Desaxismundi at Gray Area Art + Technology
There is a quote that suits Canadian sound artist Tim Hecker: “All of which decay, and in so doing, seem to take on characteristics of having lived.” He’s spent more than 15 years pursuing the concept of sonic decay and ambiance, continuously casting full geographies of lugubrious drones, heavy and roaming, that erode into piano work, orchestral field recordings and grainy, processed pipe organs. It’s stunningly picturesque music, albeit still, mournful for the fact that beauty blooms as nimbly as it dissipates. Side note: this is an electronic ambient show, not a club night. It is, however, being thrown at Gray Area, the new digital art/technology foundation that now resides in the former Grand Theater (Mission & 22nd).
