Napa Grandma Reviews BottleRock Festival

We recruited 78-year-old Napa resident Diana Mitchell (this writer’s grandmother) to review Napa’s BottleRock Festival for her first-ever rock concert.

Unofficially the oldest attendee at the event on Friday, she shares her thoughts on six of the bands that performed at BottleRock below:

Her day started with reggae, hip-hop vocalist Matisyahu:

“It didn’t seem like reggae to me. It seemed like rap, but I did get that reggae flavor. I think he had a good voice but not enough excitement for my first rock concert.”

A few songs with Delta Rae were next, including an excellent cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”.

“When I walked up, I started moving. They were great. This to me is rock ’n’ roll. I expected to see some rock ’n’ roll today, like Steven Tyler or Kiss”

A low-key set from Americana group Hurray For the Riff Raff, former New Orleans buskers, followed at the Miner Stage.

“I absolutely loved them because they had a solid beat and it made me want to get up and move and do something. If it wasn’t for my arthritic knees, I probably would have.”

Back to the main stage for TV on the Radio:

“I though that they sounded good, but they didn’t look like they cared if they were there or not. There was no personality or interaction.”

Detroit crooner Mayer Hawthorne hit the stage next:

“Love him! They acted like they really enjoyed what they were doing. There were interacting with the crowd as much as they could. I think they were good.”

The Cure closed out the main stage:

“They seemed to look more comfortable in their own skin. They seemed to have it together with easy effort. There are two or three songs that I thought were kind of rocking, the others didn’t impress me too much.”

Overall: “The young people were enjoying themselves, which was really nice to see” and the fried chicken from Smoke Open Fire was a hit.
