The recent passing of Philip Seymour Hoffman meant the world lost a great talent. He was the kind of actor who could transform without overpowering the rest of his cast or the films he was in. Although he had an Oscar to his name for Capote, he didn’t always garner the attention he deserved. What made his passing all the more painful was that it seemed he was still coming into his own, with so much left to prove. With his directorial debut under his belt, plans for his follow up were announced mere days before his death.
But instead of ruminating on what could’ve been, it’s better to remember what he was able to give during a life cut too short. It’s with that mentality that the Castro Theatre will be presenting a double feature of some of his best work every Wednesday in March. From his multiple collaborations with auteur Paul Thomas Anderson — three will be represented — to the aforementioned Oscar performance in Capote, the series will prove that he was truly the best of his generation.
