The 2013 Michelin Guide is Out

Atelier Crenn

Besides pumpkin lattes and adorable knit sweaters, one of the best things about fall is the release of Michelin Guide: San Francisco Bay Area & Wine Country, a list of the best regional restaurants.  This year, 42 restaurants made the list, including several newcomers.

Three new restaurants earned one Michelin star this year: All Spice (San Mateo), SPQR and Keiko à Nob Hill. Atelier Crenn has also been promoted from one star to two, joining the ranks of Benu, Coi, Manresa (Los Gatos), Baume (Palo Alto) and Saison. Cyrus (Healdsburg), which had been on the two-star list for years, will shut its doors in a few days, and is therefore ineligible for the 2013 list.

As in previous releases of the Michelin Guide, The French Laundry and The Restaurant at Meadwood—both in the Napa Valley—are the only three-star restaurants in the Bay Area.

The seventh edition of the Michelin Guide San Francisco Bay Area & Wine Country went on sale today and is available for $18.99, but the list of starred restaurants is available online. Aside from the prestigious—and of course pricey—restaurants on the list, there’s also the Bib Gourmand selection of “good cuisine at a reasonable price” to examine.

What do you think of the list, especially the newcomers? Share your thoughts in the comment space below.

  1. I’m in sales, so I get to take clients to nice restaurant all the time… and then expense it. A great job perk. I’ve tried just about every restaurant on the 2013 list over the years, including French Laundry. But there’s something special going on at SPQR. Even though its small (which makes it hard to bring big groups of clients) and not “white tablecloth” the food is incredible. Before chef Matthew Accarrino took over, SPQR was known for one thing on the menu, Brussels sprouts. But now everything on the SPQR menu is special. When I bring people for dinner, I tell to skip lunch bec they’ll want to try everything. Im repeatedly blown away by the level of both quality and presentation. SPQR was hard enough to get in before they got a star. Unfortunately I’m probably going to have to start making reservations months, not weeks in advance, or start looking for alternatives for my clients in that area of SFO.
