Oysterfest Party Returns June 30

It’s that time of year again kids. Time to stuff your face with those lovable little bivalves that make summer so much fun. The 13th Annual San Francisco Oysterfest makes its way to Sharon Meadows in Golden Gate Park on June 30th. This year’s event features Young the Giant, Minus the Bear, Manchester Orchestra, Little Hurricane and Rin Tin Tiger, which also headlines SF Station’s The Lineup showcase on June 13.

In addition to food and drink options, there will also be some unique fun-filled activities like the Shuck and Suck Competition and Oyster Cooking Demonstrations. If you’re really the inquisitive type, you can enjoy the Oyster History Exhibition. You could say that there’s enough going on at Oysterfest to make you as happy as a clam, but that would be entirely inappropriate.

The event is from 11am until 6pm and tickets are $35. Anyone under the age of 14 gets in for free.

    I ate the oysters last year (around a dozen), drank beer and had a fine time. Didn’t get sick but I’m sorry other people did. I’ll be there again this year, it’s a fun day with great music.

    Just because they couldn’t find definitive proof, doesn’t mean the problem didn’t exist.

    There is definitely a correlation between people who attended the Oysterfest and a massive outbreak of food poisoning. I am speaking as one of the many that fell ill. When I contacted the Health Department, they informed me that I was one of around 20 people that reported illness after attending the 2011 Oysterfest.

    As the article stated, the offending food was “all gone” by the time the Health Department came around. Most people got sick a few days after the event occurred, which is common with Campylobacter.

    Here’s what the Health Dept. had to say via the Chronicle:

    Eileen Shields, spokeswoman for the health department, said investigators couldn’t determine whether the bacteria was in the oysters, beer or any number of other food items served at the fest. After all, the food was all gone by the time word of food poisoning had gotten out.

    But rest assured, oyster lovers. Shields said there’s no ongoing concern.

    “We wanted to make sure there was nothing out there making people sick, and there isn’t,” she said.

    If you want to be sick with the worst case of food poisoning – head on down to this years oyster festival!

    Last year over 100 people were severally ill after eating at Fort Mason’s Oyster Festival. Can’t believe this didn’t get shut down!

    Last year *a lot* of people got violently sick at the Oysterfest when it was held in Fort Mason. When I reported it to the SF Department of Health, the guy mentioned that there were at least 19 reported cases. You can read more about it on this Yelp discussion thread.
