Liholiho Yacht Club: A Fresh Take On Hawaiian Food

Ravi Kapur is not only a really talented chef, but is truly one of the nicest, most affable people in the industry. And his latest venture, Liholiho Yacht Club, exhibits both his talent and love for cooking.

The pop-up, being held at Citizen’s Band in SoMa on Monday nights, features plenty of his Hawaiian roots, but also a mix of other Asian flavors as well.

The meal consists of small plates that are meant to be shared family-style. Monday marked the first in his second series of pop-ups. The menu featured five starters and five entrees along with two desserts. Among the highlights of the starters: smoked tako (octopus) with sweet onion, avocado and turnips, tofu with asparagus, dried shrimp and a chili sauce and pulehu beef tongue, barley miso and pickled cucumber. The entrees: a sticky rice with carrots and cauliflowers (braised with black bean sauce) and three meat items, fried quail with a spicy honey sauce, teriyaki beef ribs and kim chee portuguese sausage. Desserts were coconut mochi and malasadas.

The kitchen at Citizen’s Band is pretty small so it’s amazing to watch Kapur and the rest of his staff prepare each dish as quickly as they do. He seems to have a lot of fun in the kitchen as well and comes out from behind the counter to talk to guests throughout the evening, making it a more personable and enjoyable experience.

Kapur’s Pandora station of Hawaiian music is omnipresent in the background and a few Island beers are also part of the beverage list. The experience truly reminds me of a traditional Hawaiian family get together, where everyone brings a different dish, plates are shared and friends and relatives just catch up and as they say “tell stories.”

For those who may have missed Monday’s pop-up, there are still two more chances on April 16 and 23.

Citizen’s Band is located at 1198 Folsom Street. The dinners are $65, which includes gratuity and tax.
