Top Wines on Display in San Francisco

City View at Metreon served as the host Wednesday night for perhaps the best wine event in San Francisco, the 8th Annual Wine & Spirit Top 100 Tasting Event.

Wineries from around the country and around the world were selected this year for the prestigious list and they were on hand offering some of their top vintages and award-winners.

Wine & Spirits editors also selected the New & Notable Restaurants and Bars in the Bay Area which included Jasper’s Corner Tap & Kitchen, Boxing Room, Txoko, Dosa (for its new bar), Alexander’s Steakhouse, Piccino and Leopold’s.  Each was on hand to provide some tasty bites along with other local artisan purveyors.

I am not a huge wine drinker, although I enjoy a glass every now and again. What was most impressive thing is that each tasting table had someone on hand to answer any question you might have about their product.

A few of my favorites: the absolute best wine I had all night was a dessert wine from Chambers Rosewood Vineyards out of Australia. When pouring the Rutherford Rare Muscat, it was like seeing honey or syrup dripping out of a bottle. It was the best dessert wine I have ever had. And the Rutherford Grand Muscat almost matched it. I’m not a huge white wine fan either, but I tended to like those the best. The Aveleda 2010 Vinho Verde Quinta de Aveleda was another great wine as was the Yalumba 2009 Eden Valley Virgilius Viognier.

Wine & Spirit selects the wineries of the year based on their performance in blind tastings. Editors begin the process by reviewing the ratings for the past 12 months of wines in its database, than narrows the field to wineries with three strong recommendations.

The event also served as a benefit for San Francisco Baykeeper, a pollution watchdog for San Francisco Bay.

All of the wineries are featured in a special issue of Wine & Spirits Magazine, which includes the publication’s 25th Anniversary Buying Guide.

  1. Hi Keith. I am very pleased that you enjoyed the Muscats from Chambers at the Wine and Spirits tasting. It makes everything worthwhile when the wines are appreciated.

    1. Thanks Stephen, I am not a huge wine drinker, but will definitely recommend this wine to all my friends. It was great to be introduced to it.

  2. Hey Keith. I was pouring Chambers at the W&S event, so I’m glad it made such an impression. You must have been one of the special ones – I only had one bottle of the Rare Muscat, so the pours were few and far between! ;)

    1. Thanks so much Shae, it was a pleasure meeting you and being introduced to your amazing wine.
