Live Review: Odd Future at The Warfield

It’s only been two short months since the last time Odd Future was in town to bring their riotous show to a local San Francisco concert hall. Since then, the group has enjoyed performing at more than a few domestic and international music festivals including HARD festival in Los Angeles, Summer Sonic in Japan, Lowlands in the Netherlands and more.

Friday night, they arrived at The Warfield, inspiring a line of loyal Wolf Gang fans that wrapped around the block, ready to have their favorite anti hip-hop group live in front of them, running around on stage and launching themselves off of the stage and into their hands.

Odd Future member and resident DJ Syd got the night started and the venue hype when she dropped the first track of the night, Waka Flaka’s “Grove St. Party.” From that point, on The Warfield quickly turned into Odd Future’s zombie circus as the crowd’s energy brought me right back to the Sahara tent at Coachella where the Odd Future kids launched their identities and establish their stage presence.

A few moments later Hodgy Beats and Odd Future domo Tyler, the Creator emerged on stage. As Tyler broke into the first song, “Transylvania,” you could feel the crowd swing with the heavy drum beat. Fans were dancing, jumping, moshing, head banging—whatever they could to express their excitement level as the punk hip-hop collective fed off the energy.

The group understands how to share the stage as every member got more than enough mic time to leave an impression on the crowd. Damier Genesis performed a few tracks including, “Benedicition,” from his most recent mixtape Under the Influence; Mike G got chance to perform the best tracks in his catalog, “Everything I Want,” and “Go Mike G”; while Mellowhype performed crowd favorites “64,” “I Got a Gun,” and “Fuck the Police.”

Tyler effortlessly shined throughout the show. This time around—free from the cast the left him hobbling around the stage or stuck in a seat the the crew’s July show at the Regency Ballroom—he got to run freely around the stage, performing the major hits from his catalog like “French,” “Yonkers,” “Sandwiches” and “Tron Cat,” while the crowd sang along.

Notably, the group held it down for their missing comrade Earl Sweatshirt; Syd dropped “Drop” before the group came on, Tyler performed the only official EarlWolf track (Tyler aka Wolf Haley) “Orange Juice,” and as the group was leaving the stage, Syd through on “EARL” for good measure.

  2. Tyler the creator and Odd Future are promoting rape, necrophilia and all sorts of drugs to are kids. At what point do we say this is wrong??

Here is an article that breaks down the satanic and occult messages and symbols in their music and vids.

    http://beginningandend.com/antichrist-generation-tyler-creator-leads-pop-musics-open-blasphemy/

    1. Tyler The Creator and the Odd Future collective are not interchangeable things. One is a an individual and the other is a whole group of very different artists that while they may have similarities and be affiliated touch different subject matter and styles.

Tyler himself is an atheist so his disregard to religion is fairly understandable and statements he makes on it are of course from his personal point of view created from his experience with it which I don’t agree with but he has every right to have. His ideas are his own and no one is being forced to listen to his music which are works of fiction which could be said about your bible as well. Music or any form of media doesn’t cause anyone to rape, murder, or become blasphemous to your God.

I read the link you posted and there are many faults with it. You seem to believe that your religion is in someway an unquestionable source that should never be criticized. Everyone should acknowledge your beliefs but that doesn’t mean they need to respect them just because you think in some manner they are superior. The reason Christianity is far more likely to be put in the forefront of these artists works is because Christianity is without a doubt the most prominent religion in the Western world. If they were in the East you could expect them to attack Islam as some do there.

The youth of today do not think Christianity is the only religion that is foolish but also every other one as well. The only reason you see this as ‘anti-Christian’ is because you yourself are obviously Christian and would see everything that is not Christian based as ‘anti-Christian’ even when it has nothing to do with the Christian idea of Satan.

      1. Letter A, I’m 100% Christian but this has nothing to do with Tyler’s and OF’s beliefs. They don’t have to be Christian or believe in Christianity. Everyone is free to believe what they choose to. I 100% respect that. However, disagreeing with something does not give you the right to bash it, mock it and repeatedly disrespect it.

And that is what Tyler is doing. He’s not saying he doesn’t believe in Christianity. He disses Jesus, God and the faith constantly, while also reppin Satan in his lyrics heavy.

I happen to think all people are equal, no matter what race they are. If Tyler disagrees, does he now have the right to be racist? C’mon behave.

Tyler, OF and all people have free speech. They are expressing it. And you seem cool with that. So you should also be cool with people who disagree with Tyler going at him and his crew….right??? Or are the rappers the only ones allowed to voice their opinions?

        1. I agree with you that everyone is free to believe in what they choose but how can you say this has nothing to do with Tyler’s beliefs?? You’re obviously offended by them. You introduced that whole aspect to this with your link. He has the right to say whatever he chooses to say just as we do. It’s called freedom of speech/expression.

Tyler does not promote rape, does not promote necrophilia, and certainly does not promote drugs(he himself is straight edge, meaning he does not use any) but what he does promote is being yourself. Whoever that is or you choose to be.

Tyler does not believe in Christianity. The concept of being an atheist is the rejection of the belief of deities. He talks about various things he considers fiction from Wolverine to Goldy Locks. He’s not ‘reppin’ Satan, he’s ‘reppin’ himself.

When did race become on issue in this?? You’re certainly not saying what makes him a racist unless you’re thinking of the term prejudice.

Of course I believe everyone has the right to the freedom of speech and expression. You have every right to voice your opinion of Tyler and Odd Future but I would recommend actually looking closely at their work, actually listening to it, finding out about their background, and listening to the context in which they say things.

For example, do you know why Tyler talks about such dark subject matter?? The whole concept of his first two albums is about him talking to his therapist who is a alternate persona of Tyler himself known as Dr. TC.(Dr. Tyler The Creator) During his conversations the subjects become the songs in them he also has other personas like Tron Cat, and Ace The Creator that also make appearances. He tends to make ridiculous statements in them and then contradict himself by telling the truth. Most of the time when he says Satan, the Devil, or Jesus he’s using them as metaphors for his father to critiques. You could tell this just from listening closely to his most well known song ‘Yonkers’. “I’m a walking paradox”

In the words of Tyler himself, “Listen deeper than the music before you put it in a box”

          1. “One, two, you’re the girl that I want

Three, four, five, six, seven, s—

Eight is the bullets if you say no after all this”

“I’m the type to put you down and bring myself up

So when I rape a b– I hold her down and get my best nut.”

“We go skate, rape sluts, and eat donuts from Randy’s”

“I just wanna drag you’re lifeless body to the forest

And fornicate with it but that’s because I’m in love with”

No, this isn’t promoting rape at all. Noooo. Are you for real?? Like really, for real?

Blaming your daddy for ur problems doesn’t make it cool to talk about raping girls. If anything, that’s like the LAMEST excuse ever to rap about RAPE.

He rhymes about satan, wears an upside down cross on his head, tags 666 and says he’s possessed. If that is not reppin satan, what is??

And my point again is that if you are an atheist, that does not give you the right to just disrespect other religions. My point on race is that just because someone may disagree about equality does not give them the right to just make racist music. I’m not sayin OF are racists.

This group just attacks Christianity on the regular and Christians have every right to respond. The funny thing is that the Tyler fans can’t even realize that it’s a contradiction to say somethin 2 me but then say Tyler’s A-OK saying what he feels. Stop idolizing these guys. They’re just entertainers putting out a persona to make money. They don’t have more rights than “normal” people. lol.

    2. Talking about rape and promoting it are to very different things. His rape references come from his sexual frustration which in the same song you reference he goes over. I guess we’re just choosing to pick apart the little pieces rather than taking it as a whole and seeing the contexts huh??

You know that line in Yonkers about Jesus(I’m assuming here by how well you reference his work you’ll know what I’m talking about) that’s a metaphor for the people who ignorantly label him as Satanic.(Just for kicks did you know the number of people who actually see Satan as a deity is so small and insignificant?? Satanists see him as Pagan image of power, virility, sexuality and sensuality. Satan is viewed as a force of nature, not a living quasi-deity. Their Satan has nothing to do with Hell, demons, pitchforks, sadistic torture, demonic possession, and profound evil. Way to disregard your own religious intolerance huh?)

      Racism /=/ Religious prejudice.

He has every right to critique any religion he wants, it may not be right and I certainly don’t agree with him but I defend anyone’s right to say what they think about anything.

Also no it’s not a contradiction for anyone to criticize you and say Tyler is okay, that’s their opinion. I know it may seem hard to believe but people would rather have a goofy, crazy guy telling them they can have fun and be themselves over you judging them from your high horse for not agreeing with your beliefs and attempting to hide the fact that you think we’re condemned to eternal suffering because of that.

“They’re just entertainers putting out a persona to make money.”

I’m glad to see you’re finally getting it. Don’t forget they’re not a group. They’re a collective of different artists with different ideas and styles. Who just happen to be friends and accept each others differences, ideas, and have fun times creating/performing their music.

      1. Once again, you assume you know what they’re talkin about and their motives. You don’t. You just believe what they’re agents and handlers tell them to say in interviews.Thats what I meant by “persona.” I can’t believe you still believe the fairy tales these cats say on MTV.

They’re content is a whole nother story. That’s what I go off of. And they are not ‘critiquing’ anything. They’re just insulting Christianity. And ur still contradicting because now that they’re being ‘critiqued’ you have an issue with it! You are just mad because you idolize them and give them more value than other people. So bc they’re horny they can sing about rape?? Are u seriously justifying that? Ur trying to put rape desires “in context”?? What next, should we put the Holocaust “in context”? Child molestation “in context”?? C’mon maaaaaan. That’s sad.

        1. Hey, calm down. No need to insult me with MTV. I would never subject myself to watching that pro-consumer, corporate controlled pop filth.

I’ve seen interviews of them and in the ones were they choose to truly discuss rather than just fool around they show they do understand their actions and what they do. They just see themselves as music for the disenfranchised youth. Actually once you really think about it they have less in common with Rap/Hip Hop and more with early Punk Rock. Also you do know they are independent artists right?? They’ve even created their own record label to keep full control over their work rather than sign to another record label and be forced to having their work altered. No well known record label would actually sign them as they are without creative compromise. They aren’t subjected to being censored in anyway by anyone.

You know, some members of the Odd Future do insult Christianity, they have every right to do so and you have every right to just ignore their work. That doesn’t make them Satanic. You want music that truly goes against Christianity?? Listen to some Norwegian Black Metal. Not only do some of them directly attack Christianity, but you’ll find a small handful of bands that are actually satanic in the manner you understand it to be.

If I respond to your comments in an objective manner to show you information that is vital to the understanding of something it is not a contradiction. When I get tired of your double standards or your lack of research, or your lack of evidence to back a claim and mock you, it is not a contradiction. Dictionaries exist for a reason, use them to know whether you’re using the right words in the right context.

I’m mad? No sir, I am not. When I see that someone is making biased claims and attempting to influence others by only giving them bits of information that they then warp to support their beliefs especially without research or close examination I will intervene and provide objective information so that others may form their own opinions.

I don’t idolize them, I mutually-respect them like any other human I’ve never had the chance to talk to directly with yet. I don’t give them more value as a person compared to anyone else unless it’s a comparison of their work to similar artists.

No, it’s not because of their mental state that they can Rap about rape, it’s because of their rights to express themselves in any manner they wish(without directly hurting anyone of course) that they have the right to Rap about rape or anything else they want just as you do. From a psychological standpoint Tyler’s angst and violent tendencies are to be expected of his experiences and upbringing. You should appreciate that he only talks about it but does not act on his thoughts, it’s a responsible way to vent whether you find the outcome suitable or not. There are far more violent and explicit artists than Tyler and none of their works have ever caused someone to be influenced enough into taking what is said in a song and commit the acts described. People who are predispositioned to do those things will be attracted to that type of music but correlation does not equal cause.

All pieces of artistic work, actions, and events need to be put in context. You need to understand anything in whole before you form an opinion and accept the information objectively first or you are setting yourself up to have misconceptions and a lack of understanding.

Now good day sir, I realize your degradation in grammar, increasingly obvious and profound bias-ism, and unwillingness to take a moment and reconsider your thoughts and opinion make any discussion with you null.

          1. Ha ha. Nice try to act as if I’m not willing to listen. Let’s just break it down.

            1. Tyler and OF have the right to say whatever they want. That is not even an issue. So we can take that off the table.

            2. I have the right to say whatever I want about them.

            3. YOU have an issue with the link I posted because it criticizes OF. That’s where the hypocrisy comes in. Tyler can say “F- Jesus” and that in your mind is some sort of “critique.” But to someone with an actual open mind, they know he is just dissing Christianity. Period.

            4. Again, I honestly don’t care what entertainers say in interviews. They are completely manged and handled by corporations. I go by their content. Tyler and OF are consistent with anti-Christian, Satanic lyrics. They tag 666. They wear and tag upside down crosses. All of this is satanic. Regardless of what they say. And byw, Satanism is not worshiping the devil. It’s elevating yourself. Just so you know. By your standards, someone could rip Jews, tag Swastikas, wear Hitler t-shirts but should never be considered anti-semitic cuz they say “I don’t even believe in religion.”

            like I said before……SAD.

            5. Rape — YOU said earlier that he was “frustrated” and that justified his rape lyrics, now you’re just coppin to the free speech line. There’s no excuse for his sick lyrics and its IRRESPONSIBLE to give this music to millions of impressionable kids. Music affects culture and shapes behavior. These guys don’t care about their effect but I have a right to call them on it. There’s no context where having sex with a dead girl is “ok.” nice try tho….

All you are doin is justifying nonsense. Tyler can make 10,000 songs if he wants. That’s his right. Of course. but he has to take the heat for all the evil he is promoting in the world. So try to respect my voice the way you give so much respect to Tyler’s.

    3. you are ignorant. nuff said.

the songs called everything thats yours and it’s domo genesis not damier. and i think they opened with 64.

other than that review is good.

    4. Are you truly Christian sir??

I don’t understand how you could call yourself a man of Christ without embodying the greatest aspects of him.

He would not want you to hate or despise anyone. To slander them, fight them in any shape or form even after being given the first blow. He would want you to turn the other cheek. To respect your fellow brother and open your arms to embrace him even when he has hurt you.

He would not want you to follow any other man. To be told what to think, how to think, and what to feel. He would want you to be existential. To live by your own will, to choose your own path because he knows any free man not bound, constricted, or taught to fear would find the love of humanity in his heart. You do not need a book for that, only the experience of it to forever open your eyes to the power of love.

The connection of Love in Man, and God which are one in the same can not found through institution because it is not anything that could ever be captured through or explained in the creations of Man because it is a feeling. A profound feeling so great and a bond amongst us all.

The way of life can be free and wonderful for us all, but the negative focus on our differences rather than the celebration in them have created a schism. We think too much and feel to little when it’s that humanity we require most.

As a self proclaimed man of Christ how can you hate and despise these youth?? They are the future, our future. With the Love in your being, do not hate. Only the unloved hate. If we treat the youth like evil we are asking they become it.

We have the power to find happiness. Not just in one group of men but in all of them. We can improve the standards of living for everyone, create opportunities for everyone, To make sure everyone gets medical care, that no one dies of starvation, to live in a society where all are unique and equal in unison without without hate through love and respect but only through unity.

To make this reality we need to accept these youth with love and everyone else as well. As I said, only the unloved hate and hate works in cycles that can only end when we stand against it. The youth are a reflection of our society. If they are disenfranchised and full of anger than we as their elders have failed them. Show them love and compassion and in time they will find no reason to hate you or anyone else because they will become the embodiment of Love and the bond in Humanity as well.

      1. Ok, so now we are completely switching the subject to Christianity. I’m cool with that.

        1. I don’t hate Tyler, OF or anyone. Pointing out when someone is promoting evil and hated for others is not “hating” them. I did not insult Tyler or OF, I did not make any comments or call them names. But it is what it is.

        2. Christians are told in the Bible:

“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”

reprove means to expose. That is what the article I linked to is doing. It’s not telling people to hate OF. It’s pointing out that peepz may not realize that they are pushin Satan and blasphemy against Christianity. Jesus Christ spoke out against those who were disrepecting God all the time. This is all in the Gospels. You just need to crack the Bible open and get in it. I just want people to think and be aware of what’s going on in music right now.

        3. I’m just out of being a youth! And I love the youth. So don’t think my comments are meant to hate. I just think it’s crazy that you have a group that is promoting the worst behaviors possible and we are not supposed to comment. That’s not Christ-like. That’s not loving. If you don’t correct a bro or sister in error, then how are you loving them? If I know people are listening to satanic music and as a Christian don’t even try to warn them…how is that being Godly? Jesus did not come to love people and accept their behavior. He came to love them and be the light of God to show them a better way to live and have eternal life. That means realizing your SIN. And OF has SIN all over their music. And people are so into them that you would even try to justify them singing about rape! So Jesus would never just “accept” that.

And last..Christians are supposed to conform to the image of CHrist, not any man. It’s not about our will. It’s about GOD’s WILL. I’m just workin for God. I am not ASHAMED of Jesus and I will stand up for my Savior when He is blasphemed. I am not attacking OF, I am just pointing out the truth of what they’re doing.

If we don’t expose evil and injustice, it only grows. And that’s what Satan wants. And I’m doing my part to prevent that.

“it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly CONTEND for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” (book of Jude).

    5. You are promoting ignorance. Did you finish 5th grade? “are kids”. You meant, “our kids” obviously.

      1. Yes, I did. And that is the purpose of language – to communicate. I’m glad you understood.

A-Omega I suggest you watch this interview, its probably tylers most intimate interview that he really discusses himself and how he works.

I am a christian but also love Tyler’s music, I think its very creative in how its more like a visual film in your head. He wants to get images in your head the way books do the same thing, books must have a good amount of detail for the reader to get an image of what’s going on, and tyler doesn’t want someone to just hear but also visualize.

And it can also be said that the way Tyler so-called ‘disses’ Christians and Christianity that christians do the same towards atheists. Although I am christian, I do notice that atheists don’t go around telling everyone to follow there beliefs but christians and other religions seem to always try converting people or influencing one to be just like them.

Anyway Tyler, The Creator in my opinion is one of the best artists out right now and really stands out compared to everyone else. I personally listen to 80’s and 90’s rap music and underground and find Odd Future to be the only group that is reminiscent of those times.
