Rosh Hashanah Dinner with the Old World Food Truck

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. In Hebrew, it means “head of the year.” But it doesn’t happen on January 1^st; Rosh Hashanah is on the 1^st of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, which falls on the evening of September 28^th this year, when Jews around the world will be celebrating the year 5772. I’ll be heading to the South Bay to spend time with my family, but if you’re town, there’s a handsome option available from the Old World Food Truck, which will be serving Rosh Hashanah dinner at La Victoria Bakery this Wednesday night at 7:30pm.The Old World Food Truck is a new business by Chef Kenny Hockert serving up Eastern European Jewish cuisine. Think blintzes, kugel, borscht, white fish and pierogies. (If you’re reading these words for the first time ever, I suggest doing an image search.) For Rosh Hashanah, the Old World Food Truck will be hosting a communal dinner at the Mission favorite, La Victoria.

The menu for the evening includes:

• Gifelte fish with poached carrots and sweet horseradish
• Beef kreplach in broth with seasonal vegetables and dill
• Roasted chicken with Sephardic spices, dates and almonds
• Potato latkes with house made apple sauce
• Sauteed greens with squash and leeks
• Spiced honey cake with brown butter, fig compote and mint
• …and of course the traditional apples and honey, to bring in a sweet New Year.

If you’re looking for a home-style Rosh Hashanah dinner, consider this your spot. And if you’ve never had Jewish food, trust me – this is pretty darn authentic. Latkes are my favorite.

The event is BYOB and there will be no corkage fee, so feel free to bring in Manischewitz , He’Brew or Diet Coke. Please note that this is not a Kosher menu or kitchen.
