Preview: Treasure Island Night Shows

The fifth installment of the Treasure Island Music Festival is creeping up slowly. As usual, if you can’t spring for passes to the festival (October 15-16) there are a number of special night shows taking place throughout the weekend at The Independent, Mezzanine, and the California Academy of Sciences.

The Drums w/ io echo

October 15th at The Independent

Considering The Drums’ quick rise to popularity over the last year or so, it is hard to believe the group considered parting ways this year at the end of June due to disagreements over musical direction. Since then the group has expanded into a quintet and they have spent the summer touring around the world. They return to the states this fall with a slew of stops to support their second album Portamento due out September 13th on Frenchkiss Records. Though the group will not be playing the festival, they are headlining The Independent on Friday the 14th with LA duo io echo.

JFK of MSTRKRFT

October 16 at Mezzanine

It’s been a big year for JFK, who represents half of the popular DJ duo MSTRKRFT as well as the other half of one of the year’s biggest reunions Death From Above 1979. If you’re kicking yourself for missing Death From Above 1979’s Bay Area reunion stop on Saturday, the next best thing will be a riotous dose of electro bangers courtesy of JFK .

The Head and the Heart

October 15th at The Independent

The Head and the Heart are one of the biggest things out of Seattle since Starbucks and Frasier. In the last year, the group has signed to Sub Pop, re-released its self-titled album and toured extensively headlining U.S tours while opening for everyone from Dave Mathews and My Morning Jacket to Vampire Weekend and Death Cab for Cutie. This show is already SOLD OUT, which means your hopes for going lay in the hands of Craigslist scalpers or, well, a miracle.

Thao with the Get Down Stay Down

October 16th at The Independent

San Francisco-based Thao Nguyen and her band will close out the night shows and T.I.M.F festivities with a Sunday night performance at The Independent. The group is currently on tour with the aforementioned The Head and the Heart. Thao released a collaborative album earlier this year with Mirah, which received positive reviews from critics.
