The arts continue to thrive this summer with festivals, performances and more. Make the most of August with laughs, arts and even a little politics.
August 4: A Taste of Things To Come
Spoke Art Gallery
This appropriately named group art show will feature a buffet of new artwork from a selection of emerging visual artists with the intention of showing the personality and taste of the gallery. Check out these artists altogether before they each have their own showing later this year.

August 5-6: 5 Funny Females Festival
The Purple Onion
Are there really still people who think women can’t be funny? If so, point them in the direction of this two-night event packed with five different funny women for two shows each night. So, it’s more like 20 funny women from major cities with major networks like Comedy Central, NBC and Showtime on their resumes.
August 6: The Fragile Art of Existence
The Shooting Gallery
If you’ve ever seen Skinner’s work, you’ll understand how difficult it is to describe the sometimes-mythic, usually psychedelically-charged art by the self-taught visual artist. If you haven’t seen his work, now’s your chance to get your mind blown. His solo show will feature 10 mixed-media works that he’s painted from “the most vulnerable and uncertain places.”
August 12-14: The American Craft Council Show
Fort Mason Center
This craft spectacular is the largest juried indoor craft show on the West Coast and is set to feature more than 200 top contemporary artists. Along with the awesome jewelry, clothing, furniture and home décor, there will also be handmade crafts for under $100, green crafts with recycled or found materials and a demo stage with local experts.
August 21: San Francisco Mime Troupe’s 2012 – The Musical
Yerba Buena Gardens
As part of the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival’s multi-month outdoor arts celebration, the SF Mime Troupe will perform their annual new musical 2012 which addresses contemporary American. The world-renowned ensemble promises “laughter, tragedy, snappy dialogue and live music.”
August 23: Mayoral Arts Forum
YBCA Novellus Theater
For this event art and politics collide in a forum built to educate political candidates and the community about the significant role arts play in the Bay Area. Mayoral candidates of San Francisco will share their arts platforms, plans for the city’s economy and other topics.
August 28: Color Fair
Exploratorium
As if the Exploratorium is not cool enough (in that learning type of way) on a regular day, for the Color Fair they will be offering even more hands-on science activities and local artisans. The fair will take place outside in the fresh air outside of the museum and feature live demonstrations ranging from how to dye fabric to chemistry experiments. This event is free and open to the public.
