Popular classical music station KDFC has been sold, changing the landscape of radio in the Bay Area. The University of Southern California has purchased the station from Entercom Communications for an undisclosed amount.
Starting next week, KDFC will permanently move from 102.1 on the FM dial to 89.9 and 90.3, as San Jose classic rock station KUFX takes its old spot.
The Federal Communications Commission must still approve the deal, a process that could take several months. But if approved, the following moves would be made permanent.
KFDC would become a nonprofit. KUFX will simulcast on 98.5 in San Jose and 102.1 in San Francisco. And nationally renowned college radio station KUSF and Christian music station KNDL will both lose their signals.
The news came as a shock to many at the University of San Francisco who worked at KUSF. The college station started broadcasting on 90.3 FM in 1977.
The station abruptly went off the air on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Station staff have organized a meeting to decide what to do next, although the initial plan is to become an online-only station.
USF spokesman Gary McDonald said KUSF was purchased for $3.75 million.
