Marin Alsop and the Festival Orchestra perform the U.S. premiere of Sebastian Currier's Quanta, which he describes as a "sonic analogue to Chinese characters." The West Coast premiere of Huang Ruo's concerto The Color Yellow features Wu Wei, the world's leading avant-garde sheng player. Jonathan Newman's compositions incorporate styles of pop, jazz, folk, and funk into otherwise classical models. The Chicago Tribune called his work, Blow it Up, Start Again "riotously funky." The program ends with Joby Talbot's Chroma, comprised of seven movements-four are original music and three are arrangements of tracks by The White Stripes. A Talkback with Alsop, composers and artist follows the concert.
