THE WHITE RIBBON

A german childrens story

Directed by: Michael Haneke, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, 2009, 144 min.

Strange events happen in a small village in the north of Germany during the years just before World War I, which seem to be ritual punishment. The film underlines the abused, traumatized and suppressed children of the villagers and the opressive atmosphere throughout the country.

The White Ribbon is a 2009 black-and-white German-language drama film written and directed by Michael Haneke. According to Haneke, the film "is about the roots of evil. Whether it’s religious or political terrorism, it’s the same thing."
