In 1930 Lewis Milestone adapted Erich Maria Remarque’s antiwar novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” for the screen and won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director. Center point is the inner world of the 19-year-old main character, Paul Baumer. He enlists as a volunteer and is torn between his combative conviction, compassion, and a sense of self-preservation, both physically and mentally. It is known that the Nazis sabotaged the screenings of the film and that after 1933 they prohibited it completely.
