Writing Children's Picture Books

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at The Writing Salon (see times)
Picture books can do more than captivate and entertain—“they can change a child’s life,” says Shirin Yim Bridges. But getting published in this competitive genre is more than just child’s play. In this interactive and information-packed course, “We’ll start with a fun exercise to break even the toughest writer’s block. We’ll examine the particular structure and challenges of the picture book, and answer all the questions that I commonly get asked, like ‘How do you tell a satisfying story in less than one thousand words? Where does the author’s role end and the illustrator’s begin?’

“We’re really going to roll up our sleeves. With weekly exercises, we will explore and discuss how to create unique and compelling characters, optimize plot and pacing, and polish our work to the highest standards. We’ll think about how we can make our stories resonate so that they’re sought after by editors and remembered by readers. And, we will end the course with some practical advice on how to prepare manuscripts for submission, and a look at the various paths to publishing now available to picture book writers.”

Shirin Yim Bridges’ first picture book, Ruby’s Wish, is one of Publishers Weekly’s Best Children’s Books and won the Ezra Jack Keats Award. Her second book, The Umbrella Queen, made TIME/CNN’s Top 10 Lists. Mary Wrightly So Politely will be published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 2013. Shirin is also the Head Goose at Goosebottom Books, award-winning publishers of The Thinking Girl’s Treasury of Dastardly Dames. She has given workshops and seminars in writing and publishing for the Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference, the Book Passage Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference, the College of San Mateo, San Francisco State University, and Illinois State University.
