This December 5th, during First Friday Art Murmur, The Great Wall of Oakland presents Writ Large, a festival celebrating text-based artwork which uses the screen as vessel for the written word. The program will feature a variety of approaches to screen-based textual art, by artists both contemporary and historical, local and international, emerging and established, including Marcel Duchamp, Eduardo Kac, Claire Walka, John Fekner, W. Mark Sutherland, Paul Glabicki, bpNichol, Oliver Harrison, Pavel Pavlov, and Augusto DeCampos. This first installment of the festival will be a historical survey of the various genres that have been used to make screen-based text, including kinetic typography, motion design and text animation, visual poetry or “VisPo”, cine-poetry, video poems, interactive poetry, text-based digital and new media art, and some forms of what’s known as “e-lit”. Festival curators hope this sampling will help galvanize interest in this artform among local writers and artists, and coalesce diverse creative practitioners into a more cohesive community around writing for screens, as exists among writers whose work is intended for the printed pages or performance. In addition to the public program, Writ Large will be working with local writers, filmmakers, animators, and programmers, to commission new works which will be debuted at future Writ Large screenings and exhibitions.
