Description
What are the origins of Middle Eastern dance? How did the art form develop? What are the cultural attitudes toward women and this expressive art form? How do women of the Middle East incorporate dance into their daily lives? Marilyn Riehl will answer these questions, demonstrate different techniques and styles, and perform various dances during her presentation.

Marilyn Riehl brings many years of dance experience to her presentation. She began training in ballet at an early age in her hometown of Fresno. She earned both Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees in Ballet from the University of Utah. She purposely attended school there, because at the time it was one of only two universities in the nation that specifically offered a degree in ballet. After graduation Marilyn danced for ten years with Pacific Ballet of San Francisco, performing in the Bay Area and touring the Western United States under the auspices of Community Concerts. She directed Fresno Ballet Company for twelve years and also taught in a private dance school. Upon retirement from ballet she pursued her love of dance by studying the history, culture, technique, traditions and costuming of Middle Eastern dance.

Gentrain Lectures are usually held in LF 103 from 1:30 to 2:30 pm unless differently specified. Visitors are welcome; no charge or registration is required. Parking is $1.00 (quarters only) for non-society menbers.
