Classic Cars West is proud to present a solo exhibition by up-and-coming Oakland painter, Emma Webster. Webster’s work has always challenged the classical limits of painting and this new series is a dramatic departure from those bonds. In Wild Like Wanting, Webster refashions traditional landscape painting and allows a fresh discourse with the unknown to enter the work. Her free-form idyllic scenes explore communion with nature in an attempt to find answers about the creative and sublime. The massive paintings hearken to a romantic age, when we searched for inspiration, meaning, and transcendence in nature. Within Webster’s verdant greens we find mystery, danger, and temptation, both savage and familiar. Like the shock of awe itself, the atmospheric scenes are unknowable and inhospitable.
Wild Like Wanting’s abstract tapestries are magnets that pull subjective imagery and colors into the space through the veiled force of painting. Yearning to fill the void and find answers, a certain horror vaccui fuels the paintings, which are saturated with expressive marks and remnants of the artist. We uncover visual windows within the paintings, and unable to resolve what lies beyond these portals, we are left to linger at their thresholds—projecting our imaginations onto what lies beyond.
