In general, we consider anything west of San Pablo to be West Berkeley. The district is a study in how much Berkeley has changed. From being a sleepy, more industrial, warehouse area of town, West Berkeley now borders on super trendy to very cool, as evidenced by the shops along 4th Street, juxtaposed with the galleries and more art / industrial studios nearby.
