The Los Altos Stage Company’s closes its 19th anniversary season with the hilarious musical comedy with the eyebrow-raising title that took Broadway by storm when it opened in 2001. Urinetown: The Musical opens May 28 and runs through June 27 at the Bus Barn Theater in Los Altos.
With music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, the Triple Tony Award-winning Urinetown provides a humorous and cynical view of society, sustainability, capitalism and government. The musical tells the story of a futurist Gotham-like city plagued by a 20-year drought. As a result, the government has banned private bathrooms and the citizens must use pay toilets regulated by a monopolistic company. A custodian at the poorest urinal in town decides that enough is enough and, with the help of the townspeople, he leads a rebellion with a surprising ending.
The play was first produced in 1999 when the New York City Fringe Festival was looking for more musicals to add to its lineup. The success of Urinetown led to a commercial production, followed by a successful national tour. In 2002, Urinetown: The Musical won Tony Awards for Best Director, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical.
The Los Altos Stage Company's production is directed by Michael Ryken who most recently directed our hit 2012/2013 production of Avenue Q. This production features a talented ensemble of Bus Barn Theater veterans, as well as new faces, including: Michael Cabinlit, Elizabeth Cox, Gabrielle Filloux, Cindy Head, Gary Landis, Leslie Newport, Jerris Ramirez, Mario Rappa, Lewis Rawlinson, Karyn Rondeau, Krista Joy Serpa, Michael Weiland, Dan Wilson, and Todd Wright.
